Have you ever heard of St. Michael’s Lent?
It’s a traditional Catholic practice of prayer and penance that runs from the Feast of the Assumption (August 15) to the Feast of the Archangels on September 29—also known as Michaelmas. It’s not an official Church season like the Lent before Easter, but a private devotion that goes back to St. Francis of Assisi.
St. Francis used to spend these 40 days in prayer and fasting to honor both Our Lady and St. Michael the Archangel. During one of these times on Mount La Verna in 1224, he received the stigmata—the wounds of Christ.
People who observe St. Michael’s Lent often:
• Pray the St. Michael Prayer each day
• Choose one simple, doable penance (like giving up a habit or spending less time online)
• Go to Confession and try to get to Mass more often
It’s a way of asking St. Michael, the great defender of God’s people, for help in the daily battles of faith and life. Even though the 2026 season has already ended, the tradition continues each year as a reminder that we’re not alone in the fight.
Who is like God?
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
