A small stone chapel after dark. Moonlight comes through a narrow arched window. Candles burn on a simple stone altar beneath a wooden crucifix. The air is still. It is the hour of Compline — the Church’s last prayer before sleep.

A man and a woman kneel facing the altar, hands joined. Both wear the white mantle with the red cross of the Temple. His sword is on the floor, sheathed. They are not fighting. They have laid the day’s work down and placed themselves before God.
