Today we remember the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most pivotal moments in American history.
Yesterday, the battle began. Today, the fighting reached unimaginable intensity across Little Round Top, Devil's Den, the Wheatfield, and the Peach Orchard. Yesterday, the battle began. Today, the fighting reached unimaginable intensity across Little Round Top, Devil's Den, the Wheatfield, and the Peach Orchard. Tomorrow will bring the third and final day of the battle, culminating in Pickett's Charge—an event that would forever change the course of the Civil War.
As Christian Templars, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and steadfastness displayed by those who stood according to their convictions. The Civil War was a heartbreaking conflict that divided families, communities, and a nation. Many soldiers on both sides knelt in prayer, carried Bibles, and placed their trust in Jesus Christ before marching into battle. They were fellow Americans created in the image of God, caught in one of history's greatest tragedies.
While history remembers the military victory of the Union, we can also recognize the greater outcome that followed. The preservation of the United States and the eventual abolition of slavery marked a significant step toward fulfilling the truth proclaimed in Scripture—that every person bears the image of God and possesses inherent dignity and worth.
As we approach Independence Day, may we remember that the freedoms we enjoy today were preserved through tremendous sacrifice. May we also remember that true freedom is found not in governments or armies, but in Jesus Christ, who conquered sin and death on the cross.
As modern Templars, we are called not merely to admire the courage of those who came before us, but to imitate their faithfulness—putting on the full armor of God, standing firm in truth, defending the innocent, pursuing justice with mercy, and serving Christ above all earthly allegiances.
"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."
— John 15:13
May we never forget the sacrifices made on these fields, and may we strive to be faithful soldiers of Christ in our own generation.
