π INTRODUCTION β WHO REALLY LIVES IN YOUR HOUSE?
People sometimes speak about haunted houses, wandering spirits, ghosts, curses, and supernatural manifestations. During certain seasons, these ideas become especially prominent.
But the Christian should not build his worldview from movies, folklore, ghost stories, traditions, or superstition.
We ask:
βWHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURE?β
From a Dispensational perspective, we must also ask what the risen Christ revealed through Paul concerning the believer's relationship to the Holy Spirit.
Paul does not teach members of the Body of Christ to spend their lives terrified that deceased human spirits are wandering around their houses.
Instead, he teaches:
π 1 Corinthians 6:19
β...your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you...β
π Ephesians 1:13
β...ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,β
The Holy Spirit is not merely an occasional visitor.
He indwells the believer.
He seals the believer.
He strengthens the believer.
Therefore, the Christian home should not be characterized by fear of ghosts, but by faith in God's Word.
1οΈβ£ THE PRESENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The believer is permanently indwelt by the Spirit of God.
π Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19
A. His Presence Is Personal
π Romans 8:9
β...if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.β
The Holy Spirit is not merely a supernatural force or emotional feeling.
He is God dwelling in the believer.
B. His Presence Is Internal
π 1 Corinthians 3:16
β...the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?β
Under grace, God's emphasis is not upon a supposedly sacred building where His Spirit lives.
The Spirit indwells believers.
The church building is not the temple of the Holy Ghost.
The believer is.
C. His Presence Is Identifying
π 1 Corinthians 6:19β20
Because we belong to God, our bodies should glorify God.
The Holy Spirit's indwelling should affect:
our conduct,
our conversation,
our choices,
and our homes.
π₯ PREACHING LINE:
THE QUESTION IS NOT WHETHER THE HOLY GHOST IS IN YOUR HOUSEβIF YOU ARE SAVED, HE IS IN YOU!
2οΈβ£ THE PERMANENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit does not repeatedly enter and leave the saved believer.
π Ephesians 1:13β14; Ephesians 4:30; 2 Corinthians 1:21β22
A. We Are Sealed After Believing
π Ephesians 1:13
β...after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,β
Notice the order:
Hear the Gospel β Believe the Gospel β Sealed by the Spirit.
The believer does not need to beg for the Spirit to come.
B. We Are Sealed Unto Redemption
π Ephesians 4:30
β...whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.β
How long does the sealing last?
Not until your next failure.
Not until you have a bad day.
Not until Satan attacks.
βUNTO THE DAY OF REDEMPTION.β
C. We Possess the Earnest of Our Inheritance
π Ephesians 1:14
The Spirit is:
β...the earnest of our inheritance...β
God Himself guarantees our future redemption.
π₯ PREACHING LINE:
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT A TEMPORARY GUESTβHE IS GOD'S SEAL UPON THE SAVED BELIEVER.
3οΈβ£ THE PROTECTION FROM SPIRITUAL FEAR
Believers should respond to spiritual darkness with truth, not superstition.
π 2 Timothy 1:7; Romans 8:15; Ephesians 6:10β17
This does not mean Satan and spiritual evil are imaginary.
Paul clearly teaches spiritual warfare.
But spiritual warfare today should not be reduced to sensational ghost stories, charms, rituals, or superstitious practices.
A. Reject the Spirit of Fear
π 2 Timothy 1:7
βFor God hath not given us the spirit of fear...β
A Christian should not live terrified by every noise at midnight, strange dream, shadow, or unexplained event.
Not everything unexplained is demonic.
B. Recognize the Real Battle
π Ephesians 6:12
βFor we wrestle not against flesh and blood...β
Satan's greatest strategy today is not necessarily making furniture move.
His primary concern is spiritual deception.
π 2 Corinthians 11:3
He corrupts minds away from:
β...the simplicity that is in Christ.β
C. Rely Upon God's Provision
π Ephesians 6:13β17
Paul's answer to spiritual warfare is not:
holy water,
religious objects,
charms,
ritual formulas,
or superstition.
Paul points believers toward:
Truth.
Righteousness.
The gospel.
Faith.
Salvation.
The Word of God.
π₯ PREACHING LINE:
SATAN WANTS YOU LOOKING FOR GHOSTS IN THE HOUSE WHILE HE ATTACKS SOUND DOCTRINE IN YOUR MIND.
4οΈβ£ THE PRACTICE OF A SPIRIT-FILLED HOME
Being indwelt by the Spirit should produce a godly Christian household.
π Ephesians 5:18β6:4; Colossians 3:16β21
A. Let the Word Fill the Home
Compare:
π Ephesians 5:18
β...be filled with the Spirit;β
with:
π Colossians 3:16
βLet the word of Christ dwell in you richly...β
A Spirit-filled Christian life is not merely emotional excitement.
It is a life controlled by sound doctrine.
B. Let Grace Govern the Home
Ephesians 5β6 immediately applies Spirit-filled living to relationships.
Wives and husbands.
Children and parents.
The Spirit-filled home is recognizable not because everyone is shouting spiritual phrases, but because biblical doctrine is producing godly relationships.
C. Let Peace Guide the Home
π Colossians 3:15
βAnd let the peace of God rule in your hearts...β
A Christian home should not be ruled by:
anger,
bitterness,
constant fighting,
fear,
or superstition.
It should increasingly reflect Christ.
π₯ PREACHING LINE:
A SPIRIT-FILLED HOUSE IS NOT PROVED BY SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCESβIT IS PROVED BY SOUND DOCTRINE PRODUCING A GODLY WALK.
5οΈβ£ THE PROCLAMATION OF THE GOSPEL
The greatest spiritual need in any house is salvation through Christ.
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4; Romans 3:23β26; Ephesians 2:8β9
This is where we must be careful.
A family can remove every Halloween decoration.
They can refuse every occult practice.
They can stop believing in ghosts.
They can put Bible verses on every wall.
AND STILL BE LOST.
The greatest question is not:
βIs your house haunted?β
The greatest question is:
βARE THE PEOPLE IN YOUR HOUSE SAVED?β
A. Proclaim Man's Problem
π Romans 3:23
βFor all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;β
Our greatest problem is not ghosts.
Our greatest problem is sin.
B. Proclaim Christ's Payment
π 1 Corinthians 15:3β4
Christ:
died for our sins,
was buried,
and rose again the third day.
That is the heart of Paul's gospel.
C. Proclaim Salvation by Grace
π Ephesians 2:8β9
βFor by grace are ye saved through faith... Not of works...β
Salvation is not obtained through:
church membership,
water baptism,
religious rituals,
good works,
or repeating a sinner's prayer.
The sinner must rest by faith in the finished work of Christ.
π₯ PREACHING LINE:
DON'T JUST MAKE YOUR HOUSE GHOST-FREEβMAKE SURE THE PEOPLE IN YOUR HOUSE HAVE HEARD THE GOSPEL OF GRACE!
π CONCLUSION β WHAT SHOULD FILL OUR HOMES?
The Christian home should not be characterized by fascination with:
ghosts,
spirits,
occultism,
superstition,
or fear.
It should be characterized by:
God's Word,
sound doctrine,
prayer,
grace,
love,
peace,
and the Gospel of Christ.
But remember:
THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES NOT PRIMARILY INDWELL YOUR HOUSEβHE INDWELLS YOU.
Therefore, wherever the believer goes, he carries the responsibility to:
walk worthy,
think biblically,
live godly,
and preach Christ.
π£ CALL TO ACTION β THREE βF'sβ
1. FEED YOUR FAMILY THE WORD
π Colossians 3:16
Make God's Word central in your home.
Don't feed your family superstition.
Feed them sound doctrine.
2. FORSAKE SPIRITUAL FEAR
π 2 Timothy 1:7
Don't allow ghost stories, occult fears, or superstition to dominate your thinking.
Stand upon God's Word.
3. FOCUS ON THE FINISHED WORK
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4
Make sure every member of your household understands the Gospel of Grace.
Christ died for our sins.
He was buried.
He rose again.
TRUST CHRIST ALONE.
