π° INTRODUCTION β THE WHOLE MAN UNDER GRACE
Paul specifically speaks of the believer's βspirit and soul and body.β We should therefore recognize distinctions without pretending Scripture gives us a complete anatomical chart of the immaterial part of man.
More importantly, we must understand these truths rightly divided.
π 2 Timothy 2:15
The doctrine and destiny of the Church, the Body of Christ, are revealed especially through the Apostle Paul.
π Ephesians 3:1β9
π Colossians 1:24β27
For the believer today:
We have spiritual life in Christ.
Our inner man is being renewed through sound doctrine.
Our mortal body awaits redemption and glorification.
π Romans 8:23
π 2 Corinthians 4:16
π Philippians 3:20β21
This gives us three great truths:
1οΈβ£ SPIRIT β OUR SPIRITUAL POSITION
2οΈβ£ SOUL/INNER MAN β OUR SPIRITUAL PROGRESS
3οΈβ£ BODY β OUR SPIRITUAL PROSPECT
The believer's story moves from:
POSITION β PROGRESS β PROSPECT
or:
SALVATION β SANCTIFICATION β GLORIFICATION.
---
1οΈβ£ SPIRIT β OUR SPIRITUAL POSITION IN CHRIST
π 1 Corinthians 2:11β12; 6:17; Ephesians 1:13β14
The first great truth concerns our spiritual standing.
Salvation is not merely becoming religious or reforming our behavior. The moment we believe Paul's gospel, God places us into an entirely new spiritual position in Christ.
---
A. QUICKENED BY GOD
π Ephesians 2:1, 4β5
> βAnd you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;β
Before salvation, our fundamental problem was not simply poor behavior.
We were spiritually dead in trespasses and sins.
But God:
> **β...hath quickened us together with Christ...β**
Salvation gives life that religion cannot manufacture.
---
B. BAPTIZED INTO THE BODY
π 1 Corinthians 12:13
> βFor by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body...β
This is crucial in Dispensational doctrine.
The one baptism that identifies the believer with the Body of Christ is not a human religious ceremony.
π Ephesians 4:5
> βOne Lord, one faith, one baptism,β
The Holy Spirit identifies the believer with Christ and His Body.
Our identity is therefore not primarily:
Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Pentecostal, Presbyterian, or another denominational label.
Our spiritual identity is:
IN CHRIST β A MEMBER OF HIS BODY.
---
C. INDWELT BY THE SPIRIT
π 1 Corinthians 6:19
> β...your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you...β
The believer does not need to beg the Holy Spirit to come repeatedly.
The Spirit already dwells in the believer.
π Romans 8:9
The Christian life is therefore lived from a position of possessionβnot pursuitβof the indwelling Spirit.
---
D. SEALED BY THE SPIRIT
π Ephesians 1:13
> β...after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,β
Notice Paul's order:
Hear β Believe β Sealed.
The believer is not sealed because he performed enough works.
He is sealed after believing the gospel of salvation.
And Paul further says:
π Ephesians 4:30
> β...whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.β
That gives tremendous assurance.
---
E. SECURE IN CHRIST
π Romans 8:38β39
Nothing can separate the believer from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.
Our assurance rests upon Christ's finished workβnot our fluctuating emotions or daily performance.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
OUR SPIRITUAL POSITION DOES NOT REST UPON WHAT WE DO FOR CHRIST, BUT UPON WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR US IN CHRIST.
---
2οΈβ£ SOUL/INNER MAN β OUR SPIRITUAL PROGRESS THROUGH SOUND DOCTRINE
π Romans 12:1β2; 2 Corinthians 4:16; Ephesians 3:16
After salvation comes spiritual growth.
God does not save us and then leave us spiritually immature.
The believer's inner man must be strengthened, renewed, established, and transformed by truth.
This is where sound Pauline doctrine becomes essential.
---
A. MIND MUST BE RENEWED
π Romans 12:2
> β...be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...β
Christian transformation is not merely external behavior modification.
God's Word changes our thinking.
Changed thinking produces changed living.
Therefore:
RIGHT DOCTRINE β RIGHT THINKING β RIGHT LIVING.
---
B. MIND MUST BE RIGHTLY DIVIDED
π 2 Timothy 2:15
> βStudy to shew thyself approved unto God... rightly dividing the word of truth.β
All Scripture is for our learning.
π Romans 15:4
But not every command in Scripture was addressed directly to the Body of Christ.
We must distinguish:
Prophecy from Mystery.
Israel from the Body of Christ.
Law from Grace.
Earthly promises from our heavenly calling.
Confusion in division produces confusion in doctrine.
---
C. INNER MAN MUST BE RENEWED
π 2 Corinthians 4:16
> β...though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.β
Notice the contrast:
Outward man β perishing.
Inward man β renewing.
Your physical body grows older.
But your spiritual understanding can grow stronger.
A believer may become physically weaker while becoming doctrinally stronger.
---
D. INNER MAN MUST BE STRENGTHENED
π Ephesians 3:16
> β...to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;β
Spiritual strength is not measured primarily by shouting, emotion, outward manifestations, or religious excitement.
Paul emphasizes strength βin the inner man.β
Sound doctrine gives stability when emotions change and circumstances become difficult.
---
E. LIFE MUST BE TRANSFORMED
π Ephesians 4:22β24
Paul teaches believers to put off the former conversation and put on the new man.
Grace does not say:
βYou are saved, therefore sin does not matter.β
Grace teaches the opposite.
π Titus 2:11β12
Grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live soberly, righteously, and godly.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
SALVATION HAPPENS IN A MOMENT; SPIRITUAL MATURITY DEVELOPS AS SOUND DOCTRINE WORKS IN THE INNER MAN.
---
3οΈβ£ BODY β OUR SPIRITUAL PROSPECT IN GLORY
π Romans 8:22β23; 1 Corinthians 15:51β53; Philippians 3:20β21
The believer has been spiritually blessed in Christ, but our present physical body has not yet been glorified.
We still experience:
aging, weakness, sickness, pain, and eventually physical death unless the Rapture occurs first.
But this body has a glorious future.
---
A. BODY IS PRESENTLY MORTAL
π Romans 8:10β11
Our present body remains subject to mortality.
Salvation does not guarantee that believers will never become sick or physically die during this present dispensation.
Paul himself understood physical weakness.
π 2 Corinthians 12:7β10
Our hope is not perfect health now.
Our hope is future glorification.
---
B. BODY BELONGS TO GOD
π 1 Corinthians 6:19β20
> β...ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body...β
Although our body is mortal, it still matters how we use it.
Grace is not permission for immorality.
Our bodies should be instruments of service rather than instruments of sin.
π Romans 6:12β13
---
C. BODY AWAITS REDEMPTION
π Romans 8:23
Paul says we are:
> β...waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.β
Notice carefully:
The believer is already saved.
Yet there remains a future aspect of redemption concerning the body.
We are waiting for its transformation.
---
D. BODY WILL BE CHANGED
π 1 Corinthians 15:51β52
> βBehold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,β
At the Rapture, the dead in Christ will be raised and living members of the Body will be changed.
π 1 Thessalonians 4:16β17
This is part of our blessed hope.
Death does not have the final word.
---
E. BODY WILL BE GLORIFIED
π Philippians 3:20β21
> βWho shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body...β
What a future!
Our present bodies are:
Mortal β but they will become immortal.
Corruptible β but they will become incorruptible.
Weak β but they will be raised in power.
π 1 Corinthians 15:42β44, 53
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE BODY THAT NOW EXPERIENCES CORRUPTION WILL ONE DAY EXPERIENCE GLORIFICATION.
π CONCLUSION β POSITION, PROGRESS, PROSPECT
Understanding spirit, soul/inner man, and body should lead us beyond mere theological terminology.
It shows the completeness of God's work in the believer.
SPIRITUAL POSITION
We have been made alive, placed into Christ, indwelt, and sealed.
SPIRITUAL PROGRESS
Our inner man is being renewed through sound doctrine.
SPIRITUAL PROSPECT
Our mortal body awaits redemption and glorification.
Therefore, the Christian life is not:
βTry harder so God will accept you.β
It is:
KNOW WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST.
GROW THROUGH SOUND DOCTRINE.
LIVE IN LIGHT OF COMING GLORY.
π Colossians 2:10
> **βAnd ye are complete in him...β**
