INTRODUCTION β THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE DISPENSATION OF GRACE
There is much confusion today concerning the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Some identify spirituality primarily with tongues, miracles, emotional experiences, falling down, visions, dreams, or supernatural manifestations.
But when we rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15), we recognize that God's dealings in Scripture must be understood dispensationally.
The Holy Spirit's ministry connected with Israel's prophetic program must not automatically be made identical to His ministry in the Body of Christ.
For the believer today, the Holy Spirit is not someone we must repeatedly beg to βcome down.β The moment we believe the Gospel of ChristβChrist died for our sins, was buried, and rose againβwe are sealed by the Holy Spirit.
π Ephesians 1:13
Therefore, the question is not merely:
βDo you feel the Holy Spirit?β
The biblical questions are:
Have you believed the Gospel?
Are you sealed by the Spirit?
Are you walking in the Spirit according to revealed truth?
1οΈβ£ THE PERSON OF THE SPIRIT
He is Divine, Personal, and Real
π 1 Corinthians 2:10β11; Ephesians 4:30; 2 Corinthians 3:17
The Holy Spirit is not merely an influence, emotion, force, or religious atmosphere. Scripture presents Him personally and divinely.
A. He POSSESSES Knowledge
π 1 Corinthians 2:11
β...the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.β
The Spirit knows. Knowledge demonstrates personality and intelligence.
B. He POSSESSES a Will
π 1 Corinthians 12:11
β...dividing to every man severally as he will.β
The Holy Spirit exercises will. He is not an impersonal force controlled by man.
C. He POSSESSES Emotion
π Ephesians 4:30
βAnd grieve not the holy Spirit of God...β
You cannot grieve electricity or an impersonal power.
The Holy Spirit is a divine Person.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
WE DO NOT MANIPULATE THE HOLY SPIRITβWE SUBMIT TO THE TRUTH HE REVEALED.
2οΈβ£ THE PROCLAMATION OF THE SPIRIT
He Reveals and Communicates God's Truth
π 1 Corinthians 2:10β13; Ephesians 3:3β5
God's truth is not discovered by man's wisdom. It is revealed by God.
A. The Spirit REVEALS
π 1 Corinthians 2:10
βBut God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit...β
Divine truth requires divine revelation.
B. The Spirit RECORDS
π 1 Corinthians 2:13
Paul speaks of truths:
β...which the Holy Ghost teacheth...β
The Spirit communicated God's revelation through God's chosen apostles and prophets.
C. The Spirit's Revelation must be RIGHTLY DIVIDED
π 2 Timothy 2:15
All Scripture is inspired, but not every command in Scripture is addressed directly to the Body of Christ.
We must distinguish Prophecy from Mystery, Israel from the Body of Christ, and God's kingdom program from the present Dispensation of Grace.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE HOLY SPIRIT NEVER LEADS YOU CONTRARY TO THE WRITTEN WORD HE INSPIRED.
3οΈβ£ THE PERSUASION OF THE SPIRIT
He Works Through the Gospel of Christ
π 1 Corinthians 2:1β5; Romans 10:17; 1 Corinthians 15:1β4
The Spirit's work is not separated from God's revealed message.
A. The MESSAGE is Christ Crucified
π 1 Corinthians 2:2
βFor I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.β
Our preaching centers upon Christ and His finished work.
B. The MEANS is God's Word
π Romans 10:17
βSo then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.β
Faith is not produced by emotional manipulation.
Preach the Word.
C. The MYSTERY Gospel must be understood through Paul's ministry
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4; Romans 2:16; Romans 16:25
For today, the saving message is Christ's death for our sins, His burial, and resurrection.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE SPIRIT DOES NOT SAVE THROUGH RELIGIOUS CEREMONY; GOD SAVES THE SINNER WHO BELIEVES THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST.
4οΈβ£ THE PLACEMENT BY THE SPIRIT
He Baptizes the Believer into the Body
π 1 Corinthians 12:13; Romans 6:3β4; Galatians 3:27
Here is one of the most important Dispensational distinctions concerning baptism.
A. ONE SPIRIT
π 1 Corinthians 12:13
βFor by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body...β
The Spirit performs the baptism.
B. ONE BODY
The result is identification with Christ and membership in His Body.
π 1 Corinthians 12:27
βNow ye are the body of Christ...β
C. ONE BAPTISM
π Ephesians 4:5
βOne Lord, one faith, one baptism,β
From a Dispensational understanding, the operative baptism for the Body of Christ today is Spirit baptism, not water baptism as a requirement for salvation or membership in Christ's Body.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
WATER CAN PUT YOU INTO WATER; ONLY THE SPIRIT CAN PUT YOU INTO CHRIST'S BODY.
5οΈβ£ THE PRESENCE OF THE SPIRIT
He Indwells Every Believer
π Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19
The believer does not need to travel somewhere to find God's presence.
A. His RESIDENCE is in the Believer
π 1 Corinthians 6:19
β...your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you...β
B. His RESIDENCE belongs to Every Saved Person
π Romans 8:9
β...if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.β
Having the Spirit is not reserved for an elite class of Christians.
C. His RESIDENCE demands Responsible Living
π 1 Corinthians 6:20
βFor ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body...β
Grace does not encourage careless living.
Grace gives us a new reason for godliness.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE BELIEVER DOES NOT NEED MORE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT; THE HOLY SPIRIT SHOULD HAVE MORE CONTROL OF THE BELIEVER THROUGH THE WORD.
6οΈβ£ THE PRESERVATION OF THE SPIRIT
He Seals the Believer unto Redemption
π Ephesians 1:13β14; Ephesians 4:30
This is one of the strongest truths concerning eternal security.
A. The SEALING follows Believing
π Ephesians 1:13
β...after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,β
We do not earn the sealing.
God seals the believer.
B. The SEAL guarantees Security
π Ephesians 4:30
β...whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.β
Notice the duration:
UNTIL THE DAY OF REDEMPTION.
Not until your next failure.
Not until you commit another sin.
Not until you lose your emotions.
C. The SPIRIT is our Earnest
π Ephesians 1:14
The Spirit is the earnest of our inheritanceβGod's guarantee concerning what He has promised.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
WE ARE NOT HOLDING ON TO GOD TO STAY SAVEDβGOD HAS SEALED US BY HIS SPIRIT.
7οΈβ£ THE PRAYER OF THE SPIRIT
He Helps Our Infirmities
π Romans 8:26β27
Believers sometimes misunderstand prayer. We do not always know what we should pray for.
But God has made provision.
A. He HELPS our Weakness
π Romans 8:26
βLikewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities...β
The Spirit knows our weakness.
B. He HELPS when we lack Wisdom in Prayer
β...for we know not what we should pray for as we ought...β
Prayer is not a technique for manipulating God.
C. He INTERCEDES according to God's Will
π Romans 8:27
β...he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.β
Our confidence rests not in our eloquence but in God's provision.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY, GOD IS NOT CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED.
8οΈβ£ THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT
He Produces Godly Living Through Truth
π Romans 8:1β4; Galatians 5:16; Ephesians 3:16
The Spirit-filled life is not primarily about spectacular manifestations.
It is about Christ being formed in our practical walk.
A. POWER over the Flesh
π Galatians 5:16
βWalk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.β
The answer to the flesh is not returning to Mosaic law.
B. POWER for the Inner Man
π Ephesians 3:16
β...strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;β
God works from the inside outward.
C. POWER through Grace Doctrine
π Romans 6:14
βFor sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.β
Grace is not permission to sin.
Grace is God's program for victorious Christian living.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE IS NOT CONTROLLED BY FEELINGS; IT IS GOVERNED BY SOUND DOCTRINE WORKING IN THE INNER MAN.
9οΈβ£ THE PRODUCE OF THE SPIRIT
He Produces Spiritual Fruit
π Galatians 5:22β25
Spirituality is not measured by how loudly someone shouts or how dramatically someone behaves.
Paul gives us measurable evidence.
A. FRUIT in Character
π Galatians 5:22
βBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace...β
The Spirit changes character.
B. FRUIT in Conduct
π Galatians 5:22β23
Longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance become evident in practical life.
C. FRUIT through Walking
π Galatians 5:25
βIf we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.β
Our position should influence our practice.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE STRONGEST EVIDENCE OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY IS NOT A SPECTACULAR GIFT BUT A SCRIPTURALLY TRANSFORMED LIFE.
π THE PROGRAM OF THE SPIRIT
He Glorifies Christ Through the Body of Christ
π Ephesians 3:9β10, 21; Philippians 1:20; 1 Corinthians 12:12β13
Here we reach the dispensational purpose.
God is forming something today that was once a mystery:
THE BODY OF CHRIST.
A. A MYSTERY was Revealed
π Ephesians 3:9
Paul was commissioned:
βAnd to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery...β
This truth had been hid in God.
B. A MANIFESTATION of God's Wisdom
π Ephesians 3:10
Through the church, the manifold wisdom of God is displayed even to principalities and powers in heavenly places.
C. A MISSION to Glorify Christ
π Ephesians 3:21
βUnto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus...β
The Holy Spirit does not draw attention to human personalities.
His ministry works toward God's purpose in Christ.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT BUILDING OUR PERSONAL KINGDOMSβHE IS WORKING OUT GOD'S PURPOSE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST.
π CONCLUSION β THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE BELIEVER TODAY
When we rightly divide Scripture, we discover that the Holy Spirit is not merely about emotional experiences or miraculous manifestations.
He is intimately involved in the believer's entire Christian life.
He REVEALS truth.
He PLACES us into Christ's Body.
He INDWELLS us.
He SEALS us.
He HELPS us in prayer.
He STRENGTHENS the inner man.
He PRODUCES spiritual fruit.
He works according to God's revealed purpose for the Body of Christ.
Therefore:
DON'T SEEK A SENSATION WHEN GOD HAS GIVEN YOU SCRIPTURAL TRUTH.
π£ CALL TO ACTION β THREE βW'sβ
1. WALK IN THE SPIRIT
π Galatians 5:16
Do not live under the domination of the flesh. Allow sound grace doctrine to renew your thinking and govern your conduct.
2. WALK IN THE WORD
π Colossians 3:16
βLet the word of Christ dwell in you richly...β
The Spirit-filled life and the Word-filled life are inseparable in practical Christian living.
3. WALK WORTHY
π Ephesians 4:1
Your salvation is secure, but your walk matters.
We do not live godly lives to become saved.
We live godly lives because we are already saved by grace and sealed by the Spirit.
