INTRODUCTION β ONE GOD, THREE PERSONS
The word βTrinityβ is not found in the Bible, but the doctrine expressed by that word is revealed throughout Scripture. The Bible does not teach three Gods, nor does it teach that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are merely three titles or manifestations of one Person.
Biblical Trinitarian doctrine teaches:
There is ONE God.
The Father is God.
The Son is God.
The Holy Spirit is God.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are personally distinct.
π 1 Corinthians 8:4 β β...there is none other God but one.β
From a Dispensational perspective, Paul's epistles give remarkable clarity concerning the believer's relationship with all three Persons of the Godhead.
π Ephesians 4:4β6 presents:
One Spirit β v.4
One Lord β v.5
One God and Father β v.6
And Ephesians 2:18 beautifully summarizes our relationship with the Triune God:
THROUGH THE SON β BY THE SPIRIT β UNTO THE FATHER.
Our three alliterated points are:
THE FATHER β PURPOSE
THE SON β PROVISION
THE SPIRIT β POWER
1οΈβ£ THE FATHER β HIS PURPOSE
π Ephesians 1:3β6; 3:9β11; 4:6
The Father is not merely βGod in another mode.β He is personally distinguished from the Son and the Holy Spirit. In Paul's revelation, we see the Father's eternal purpose being accomplished through Christ.
A. THE FATHER PLANNED
π Ephesians 1:3β4
βBlessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christβ¦β
God's plan did not begin when man sinned.
Before the foundation of the world, God already knew His eternal purpose in Christ.
For the Body of Christ, our blessings are not earthly promises connected with Israel's covenant program.
Paul says:
β...all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.β
Our position is heavenly because our calling is in Christ.
B. THE FATHER PURPOSED
π Ephesians 1:9β10
Paul speaks about:
β...the mystery of his willβ¦β
God's ultimate purpose centers everything in Christ:
β...things in heaven, and things on earthβ¦β
Right division helps us recognize two spheres within God's great purpose:
Prophecy particularly reveals God's purpose concerning the earth.
The Mystery reveals God's previously hidden purpose concerning the heavenly places through the Body of Christ.
π Compare Acts 3:21 with Romans 16:25β26.
C. THE FATHER PREDESTINED
π Ephesians 1:5
βHaving predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himselfβ¦β
This should not be reduced to the idea that God arbitrarily predestined certain unbelievers to believe while refusing salvation to everyone else.
Paul's emphasis is the glorious destiny God has prepared for those who are in Christ.
π Ephesians 1:11
The believer has a predetermined position and inheritance in Christ.
D. THE FATHER PROVIDED
π Romans 8:32
βHe that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us allβ¦β
Salvation originated in God's grace.
We did not persuade an unwilling God to save us.
God provided what sinful humanity could never provide for itself.
He gave His Son.
E. THE FATHER PLACED CHRIST ABOVE ALL
π Ephesians 1:20β22
God:
β...set him at his own right hand in the heavenly placesβ¦β
Christ presently occupies the place of supreme authority.
He is:
above principality,
above power,
above might,
above dominion.
And He is the Head of the Church, the Body of Christ.
F. THE FATHER WILL PERFECT HIS PURPOSE
π Ephesians 3:10β11
βAccording to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.β
The Church which is Christ's Body is not God's emergency plan.
It belongs to His eternal purpose.
What was once a Mysteryββhid in Godβ (Ephesians 3:9)βhas now been revealed through the apostle Paul.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE FATHER DESIGNED THE PURPOSE; CHRIST IS THE CENTER OF THE PURPOSE; AND THE BODY OF CHRIST HAS A HEAVENLY PLACE WITHIN THAT PURPOSE.
2οΈβ£ THE SON β HIS PROVISION
π Romans 3:24β26; 1 Corinthians 15:1β4; Colossians 1:13β20
Jesus Christ is not a created being.
He is not merely a prophet.
He is not merely a good teacher.
He is eternally God, who truly became man.
π Colossians 2:9
βFor in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.β
A. CHRIST PERSONIFIES GOD
π Colossians 1:15
βWho is the image of the invisible Godβ¦β
If you want to understand the character and glory of God, look to Christ.
He is not merely similar to God.
Scripture attributes deity to Him.
π Titus 2:13
β...the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.β
B. CHRIST POSSESSES CREATORSHIP
π Colossians 1:16
βFor by him were all things createdβ¦β
Jesus cannot be part of creation if all things were created by Him.
Paul specifically mentions:
visible and invisible,
thrones,
dominions,
principalities,
powers.
Christ is Creator.
C. CHRIST PREEXISTED CREATION
π Colossians 1:17
βAnd he is before all thingsβ¦β
Bethlehem was the beginning of Christ's human life on earth, not the beginning of His existence.
The Son existed before creation.
Indeed:
β...by him all things consist.β
D. CHRIST PAID FOR SIN
π 1 Corinthians 15:3
β...Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures.β
Here stands the heart of Paul's Gospel.
Our salvation rests not upon what we do for Christ, but upon what Christ accomplished for us.
π Romans 5:8
β...while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.β
E. CHRIST PROVIDED REDEMPTION
π Colossians 1:14
βIn whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.β
The believer does not work toward redemption.
Paul says:
βWE HAVE REDEMPTION.β
It is a present possession in Christ.
Our redemption is not purchased by water baptism, religious works, keeping Israel's Law, sacraments, or church membership.
THE PRICE WAS CHRIST'S BLOOD.
F. CHRIST PREVAILS AS HEAD
π Colossians 1:18
βAnd he is the head of the body, the churchβ¦β
This is especially important dispensationally.
Christ is the Head.
The Church today is His Body.
π 1 Corinthians 12:27
βNow ye are the body of Christβ¦β
The Body does not replace Israel.
Rather, the Body of Christ is the new creation revealed through Paul's apostleship in connection with the Mystery.
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE SON IS NOT SIMPLY PART OF GOD'S PLANβTHE SON IS THE CENTER OF GOD'S ETERNAL PURPOSE AND THE COMPLETE PROVISION FOR OUR SALVATION.
3οΈβ£ THE HOLY SPIRIT β HIS POWER
π Ephesians 1:13β14; 1 Corinthians 2:10β13; Romans 8:9β16
The Holy Spirit is not merely an influence, emotion, supernatural force, or religious feeling.
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD.
π 1 Corinthians 2:10β11
He searches, knows, reveals, teaches, leads, seals, and intercedesβpersonal actions demonstrating that He is not an impersonal force.
For the Body of Christ, Paul's epistles particularly emphasize the Spirit's work in believers.
A. THE SPIRIT PLACES US INTO CHRIST
π 1 Corinthians 12:13
βFor by one Spirit are we all baptized into one bodyβ¦β
This is crucial in Dispensational doctrine.
The one baptism of Ephesians 4:5 is not dependent upon water.
The Holy Spirit identifies the believer with Christ and His Body.
SPIRIT BAPTISM PLACES US INTO THE BODY OF CHRIST.
B. THE SPIRIT PERMANENTLY INDWELLS
π Romans 8:9
β...if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.β
Every saved member of the Body possesses the Holy Spirit.
There are not two classes of Christians:
βordinary Christiansβ and βChristians who finally received the Spirit.β
If you belong to Christ, the Spirit dwells in you.
C. THE SPIRIT PRESERVES BY SEALING
π Ephesians 1:13
β...after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.β
Notice the dispensational order:
HEARD β BELIEVED β SEALED.
The Spirit's sealing is not a temporary emotional experience.
π Ephesians 4:30
We are:
β...sealed unto the day of redemption.β
This is powerful assurance of the believer's security in Christ.
D. THE SPIRIT PROVIDES UNDERSTANDING
π 1 Corinthians 2:12
βNow we have receivedβ¦ the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.β
The Spirit does not lead believers away from Scripture.
He inspired God's Word and enables spiritual understanding.
But we must study that Word correctly.
π 2 Timothy 2:15
β...rightly dividing the word of truth.β
SPIRITUALITY NEVER CANCELS SOUND BIBLE STUDY.
E. THE SPIRIT PRODUCES GODLY WALK
π Galatians 5:16
βWalk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.β
The Christian life is not maintained by returning to Israel's Mosaic Law.
π Galatians 5:18
βBut if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.β
Grace does not produce careless living.
Grace teaches us to live differently because of who we already are in Christ.
F. THE SPIRIT PRODUCES FRUIT
π Galatians 5:22β23
βBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peaceβ¦β
Notice Paul says:
FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
not merely:
EFFORT OF THE FLESH.
As sound doctrine renews our minds and we yield ourselves to God, the Spirit produces Christlike character through us.
π Romans 12:1β2
π₯ PREACHING TRUTH:
THE SPIRIT PLACES US IN CHRIST, LIVES IN US, SEALS US, TEACHES US THROUGH TRUTH, STRENGTHENS OUR WALK, AND PRODUCES HIS FRUIT THROUGH US.
π₯ THE TRINITY IN OUR SALVATION
Paul gives us one of the clearest Trinitarian patterns in Scripture:
π Ephesians 2:18
βFor through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.β
Notice:
UNTO THE FATHER β DESTINATION
THROUGH THE SON β MEDIATION
BY THE SPIRIT β ACCESS
Not three Gods.
Not one Person pretending to be three.
ONE GOD β THREE DISTINCT PERSONS.
And all three Persons are active in God's saving purpose.
π CONCLUSION β THE GODHEAD WORKS IN PERFECT UNITY
The doctrine of the Trinity is not merely theological terminology for seminary classrooms.
It touches the entire Christian life.
THE FATHER PURPOSED.
THE SON PROVIDED.
THE SPIRIT PERFORMS.
The Father planned our blessings in Christ.
The Son accomplished redemption through His blood.
The Spirit places the believing sinner into Christ and seals him unto the day of redemption.
π 2 Corinthians 13:14
βThe grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghostβ¦β
That is beautiful Pauline Trinitarian truth.
π£ CALL TO ACTION β THREE RESPONSES
1οΈβ£ BELIEVE THE GOSPEL
π 1 Corinthians 15:1β4
Christ died for our sins.
He was buried.
He rose again the third day.
Do not trust religion, baptism, law-keeping, church membership, or personal righteousness.
TRUST CHRIST'S FINISHED WORK ALONE.
2οΈβ£ BUILD YOUR LIFE UPON SOUND DOCTRINE
π Romans 12:2
βAnd be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mindβ¦β
Study Paul's epistles.
Understand your identity in Christ.
Learn God's Word rightly divided.
π 2 Timothy 2:15
3οΈβ£ BEHAVE ACCORDING TO YOUR POSITION
π Ephesians 4:1
β...walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.β
You have been blessed by the Father.
You have been redeemed by Christ.
You have been indwelt and sealed by the Spirit.
NOW WALK LIKE WHO GOD HAS MADE YOU IN CHRIST.
π‘ FINAL THOUGHTS
