Honestly you have to seek, or yearn for Jesus. He doesn't chase us down, rather we should seek after Him. It is a relationship, you can be as close to Jesus as you choose to be. Jesus said seek and you shall find. (Mathew 7:7)
His Words cannot come back void, if you are comfortable in your one day a week situation God allows that, but if you Seek Him, He grows the fruits of Spirit in you. Those fruits touch everyone around you. That comes from a personal relationship.

You can know of Jesus, but you have to KNOW JESUS, trust Jesus with all of you, with a boldness and assurance of the Holy Spirit.

The man that wrote that understood the relationship. Salvation doesn't come from the relationship, it is the complete opposite.
Once you understand Salvation comes freely through His Mercy, and His Grace, Christ's Alone, that should make you desire the Relationship, which produces the Fruit of the Spirit.
