When Pride Rises, Wisdom Falls

When Pride Rises, Wisdom Falls
Scripture — Proverbs 11:2 (NIV)
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
Pride rarely announces itself. It can quietly enter our hearts through success, knowledge, position, recognition, or even our desire to be right. We begin to trust our own strength and forget that everything we have ultimately comes from God.
Proverbs reminds us that pride leads us away from wisdom. When we become convinced that we already know enough, we stop listening. When we believe we are strong enough, we stop depending on God. And when we seek recognition rather than obedience, our hearts can lose their proper direction.
Humility is not weakness. Humility is recognizing who God is and who we are before Him. A humble person can receive correction, admit mistakes, listen to others, and remain teachable. Most importantly, humility keeps us dependent on God.
Jesus demonstrated perfect humility. Though He was Lord, He willingly served others and submitted Himself to the Father's will. True greatness in God's Kingdom is not measured by how high we rise, but by how faithfully we serve.
Today, ask God to search your heart. Where pride has taken root, surrender it. Where you have been unwilling to listen, become teachable again. Where you have trusted yourself more than God, return to Him.
Prayer:
Lord, keep my heart humble before You. Protect me from pride, self-reliance, and the desire for recognition. Give me wisdom to listen, courage to accept correction, and grace to serve without seeking praise. May everything I do point back to You. Teach me to walk humbly with You each day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Action Step
Before making an important decision today, pause and pray:
“Lord, what would You have me do?”
Then be willing to listen—even if His answer requires you to set your own pride aside.
Quote for today:
“Pride asks, ‘How will this make me look?’ Humility asks, ‘How can I honor God?’”
