Dispensational Key: 2 Timothy 2:15
Grace Key: Ephesians 3:1–9
Gospel Key: 1 Corinthians 15:1–4
🔰 INTRODUCTION — LEARN FROM THEM, BUT RIGHTLY DIVIDE THEM
David, Noah, Moses, Job, Abraham, and Joseph lived in different historical settings. Their experiences contain powerful lessons about faith, suffering, obedience, God's faithfulness, and perseverance.
But from a Dispensational perspective, we must make an important distinction:
Their stories were written FOR our learning, but their specific programs and instructions were not necessarily written TO the Body of Christ.
📖 Romans 15:4 says they were “written for our learning.”
📖 2 Timothy 3:16 says:
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable…”
But 📖 2 Timothy 2:15 commands us to be:
“…rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Therefore, we should not turn Noah's ark, Israel's Red Sea deliverance, Abraham's land promises, David's kingdom victories, or Joseph's providential experiences into direct promises that God will reproduce the same circumstances for us today.
Our direct doctrinal position as members of the Body of Christ is found especially in the revelation given through Paul, the apostle of the Gentiles.
📖 Romans 11:13; Ephesians 3:1–9
So what can these six men teach us when understood through right division?
1️⃣ DAVID — COURAGE IN CONFLICT
“With God, no giant is too big to defeat.”
📖 1 Samuel 17:45–47
David faced Goliath while Israel trembled.
However, we should not preach this as though every believer today is guaranteed miraculous victory over every earthly difficulty. David lived under Israel's program and was God's anointed king.
The Body of Christ has a different calling. Yet David's courage teaches us valuable spiritual principles.
A. COURAGE IN CONFRONTATION
📖 1 Samuel 17:45
David did not allow Goliath's size to determine his confidence.
For believers today, our warfare is fundamentally spiritual.
📖 Ephesians 6:12
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood…”
Our “giants” may include fear, discouragement, temptation, doctrinal confusion, and opposition to truth.
B. CONFIDENCE IN CHRIST
📖 Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Paul's confidence was not self-confidence.
It was Christ-sufficiency.
Grace does not teach:
“Believe in yourself.”
Grace teaches:
“Depend upon Christ.”
C. COMMITMENT IN CONFLICT
📖 2 Timothy 4:7
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
Paul did not promise an easy course.
He demonstrated a faithful course.
🔥 PREACHING LINE:
DAVID FACED A GIANT WITH COURAGE; WE FACE OUR COURSE WITH CONFIDENCE IN CHRIST.
2️⃣ NOAH — CONSTANCY IN CORRUPTION
“Stay faithful even when the world doubts you.”
📖 Genesis 6:8–9, 22
Noah lived during an extraordinarily corrupt generation.
📖 Genesis 6:5
Yet Noah obeyed what God specifically commanded him.
We are not commanded to build an ark, but we can learn from Noah's steadfastness.
A. CONSTANCY WHEN CULTURE CHANGES
📖 Genesis 6:9
Noah lived faithfully despite the wickedness surrounding him.
Likewise Paul commands:
📖 Philippians 2:15
“…in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation…”
The world does not determine our doctrine.
God's Word does.
B. CONVICTION WHEN CRITICIZED
📖 2 Timothy 1:13
“Hold fast the form of sound words…”
Truth does not become false because it becomes unpopular.
A grace believer should stand firmly for truth without becoming arrogant or combative.
C. CONTINUANCE WHEN CHALLENGED
📖 1 Corinthians 15:58
“…be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”
Faithfulness is not measured merely by excitement at the beginning.
It is demonstrated by continuance.
🔥 PREACHING LINE:
WHEN CULTURE CHANGES, GOD'S TRUTH DOES NOT NEED TO CHANGE WITH IT.
3️⃣ MOSES — CONFIDENCE IN CRISIS
“God will make a way”—but understand the promise dispensationally.
📖 Exodus 14:13–14
At the Red Sea, Israel appeared trapped.
God miraculously opened the sea.
But right division keeps us from turning Exodus 14 into a promise that God will miraculously remove every obstacle confronting members of the Body of Christ.
Paul himself experienced suffering that God did not immediately remove.
📖 2 Corinthians 12:7–10
What, then, can we learn?
A. CALMNESS IN CRISIS
📖 Philippians 4:6–7
Paul tells believers:
“Be careful for nothing…”
God may not open a literal sea, but believers can experience God's peace through prayer and thanksgiving.
B. CONTENTMENT IN CIRCUMSTANCES
📖 Philippians 4:11
“…I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”
Biblical faith does not require favorable circumstances.
Paul learned contentment inside difficulty.
C. CONFIDENCE IN CHRIST
📖 2 Corinthians 12:9
“My grace is sufficient for thee…”
Sometimes God changes the situation.
Sometimes He gives grace sufficient to endure it.
For Paul, weakness became an opportunity to experience the sufficiency of Christ.
🔥 PREACHING LINE:
ISRAEL SAW GOD OPEN THE SEA; PAUL LEARNED THAT EVEN WHEN THE TROUBLE REMAINED, GOD'S GRACE WAS SUFFICIENT.
4️⃣ JOB — CONSTANCY THROUGH CALAMITY
“Trials may be great, but do not abandon God when life becomes difficult.”
📖 Job 1:20–22
Job lost possessions, children, and health.
His story teaches us that suffering does not automatically mean a person has secretly committed some terrible sin.
But again, Job's experiences must not be turned into direct promises for the Body of Christ.
A. PAIN DOES NOT PROVE PUNISHMENT
📖 2 Corinthians 4:8–9
Paul experienced:
“Troubled… perplexed… persecuted… cast down…”
Being saved by grace does not guarantee freedom from earthly suffering.
B. PRESSURE CAN PRODUCE PATIENCE
📖 Romans 5:3–4
“…tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope…”
Grace does not always remove pressure.
God's Word can establish us through pressure.
C. POWER APPEARS IN WEAKNESS
📖 2 Corinthians 12:9–10
Paul learned:
“…when I am weak, then am I strong.”
Christian strength is not pretending that pain does not hurt.
It is depending upon Christ when our own resources are exhausted.
🔥 PREACHING LINE:
FAITH IS NOT PROVEN ONLY WHEN GOD REMOVES THE TRIAL—FAITHFULNESS IS ALSO SEEN WHEN WE CONTINUE THROUGH IT.
5️⃣ ABRAHAM — CONFIDENCE IN GOD'S COMMITMENT
“God's promises never fail—but claim the promises that belong to you.”
📖 Genesis 12:1–3; Romans 4:20–21
Abraham is a tremendous example of faith.
But right division is especially important here.
God promised Abraham:
a land,
a nation,
a seed,
and covenant blessings.
Those promises concern God's purpose involving Abraham and Israel. We should not simply transfer Israel's covenant promises to the Body of Christ.
A. BELIEVE WHAT GOD HAS SPOKEN
📖 Romans 4:20–21
Abraham was:
“…fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”
Faith believes what God actually said.
Biblical faith is not inventing a promise and demanding that God fulfill it.
B. BELIEVE WHAT GOD SAYS TO US TODAY
📖 Ephesians 1:3
For the Body of Christ:
“…blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”
Our blessings are described as spiritual and heavenly in Christ.
C. BELIEVE WITHOUT BOASTING
📖 Romans 4:5
“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly…”
Paul uses Abraham to demonstrate justification by faith apart from works.
Salvation cannot be earned.
🔥 PREACHING LINE:
FAITH DOES NOT CLAIM EVERY PROMISE IN THE BIBLE—FAITH BELIEVES GOD'S WORD AS GOD GAVE IT, RIGHTLY DIVIDED.
6️⃣ JOSEPH — CHARACTER THROUGH CIRCUMSTANCES
“What others meant for evil, God used for good.”
📖 Genesis 50:20
Joseph's brothers intended evil against him.
Yet God used those events within His purpose concerning Israel.
Joseph went:
from the pit,
to slavery,
to prison,
to Pharaoh's palace.
However, Genesis 50:20 should not be turned into a blanket guarantee that every painful event in a believer's life will produce visible earthly success.
For members of the Body of Christ, Paul's doctrine gives us a stronger focus.
A. CHARACTER DURING INJUSTICE
📖 Romans 12:17
“Recompense to no man evil for evil.”
Joseph suffered injustice without allowing bitterness to become his master.
Grace teaches us not to repay evil with evil.
B. CHARITY TOWARD INJURERS
📖 Ephesians 4:31–32
“…be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another…”
The grace that God has shown us should shape how we respond to others.
C. CONFIDENCE BEYOND CIRCUMSTANCES
📖 Romans 8:35–39
Nothing can separate the believer from the love of God in Christ.
Your circumstances can change.
Your friends can change.
Your finances can change.
Your health can change.
But your position in Christ remains secure.
🔥 PREACHING LINE:
JOSEPH'S CIRCUMSTANCES CHANGED DRAMATICALLY; OUR GREATER CONFIDENCE IS THAT OUR POSITION IN CHRIST DOES NOT CHANGE.
📣 CALL TO ACTION — THREE “S's”
1️⃣ STUDY THE SCRIPTURES
📖 2 Timothy 2:15
Do not build doctrine merely from inspirational quotations.
Read the context.
Identify the audience.
Recognize the dispensation.
Study carefully.
2️⃣ STAND IN GRACE
📖 Romans 5:1–2
We have:
“…access by faith into this grace wherein we stand…”
Do not return to law, performance, or religious works as the basis of acceptance with God.
Stand in grace.
3️⃣ SERVE THE SAVIOUR
📖 1 Corinthians 15:58
“…always abounding in the work of the Lord…”
David, Noah, Moses, Job, Abraham, and Joseph completed their courses in their respective settings.
You also have a course.
Serve Christ faithfully while you have opportunity.
🏁 CONCLUSION — THEIR STORIES, OUR LEARNING, PAULINE DOCTRINE FOR OUR WALK
These Old Testament saints teach powerful lessons, but right division keeps inspiration from becoming misapplication.
We learn from:
David's courage.
Noah's constancy.
Moses' confidence.
Job's endurance.
Abraham's faith.
Joseph's character.
But we establish our doctrine for the Body of Christ according to the revelation committed to Paul.
📖 Romans 16:25
“Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery…”
And above every biblical hero stands Jesus Christ.
Our salvation is not found in imitating David, Noah, Moses, Job, Abraham, or Joseph.
Our salvation rests entirely upon Christ's finished work:
📖 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Christ died for our sins.
He was buried.
He rose again the third day.
