WHAT MADE DAVID A MAN AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART?
David is one of the hardest men in Scripture to understand if you think being “after God’s own heart” means being spotless.
David committed adultery, arranged Uriah’s death, failed badly in his own house, and made decisions that brought real consequences on other people.
Still, God said,
“The LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart.”
1 Samuel 13:14 KJV
Acts gives us more of the answer.

Acts gives us more of the answer.
“I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.”

David wanted God, even when he failed Him.
The difference between David and Saul makes this much clearer.
When Saul was confronted, he defended himself. He blamed the people, explained what happened, and then asked Samuel to honor him in front of everybody anyway.
David was confronted by Nathan and answered,
“I have sinned against the LORD.”
2 Samuel 12:13 KJV
Psalm 51 shows how deeply he meant it.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10 KJV
David’s failures were serious, but so was his repentance.
He cared about God’s name when Goliath mocked Him. He wanted the ark in Jerusalem because he wanted God at the center of the kingdom. When God told him Solomon would build the temple instead, David still spent years preparing for it.
He wasn’t trying to build a reputation for himself. He wanted God honored.
That’s what stands out to me about David.
His life was messy. His heart kept turning back to God.
A man after God’s own heart isn’t a man who never screws up. It’s a man who can still hear God when he’s wrong, own it, repent, and come back without spending all his energy protecting his pride.
David prayed,
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts.”
Psalm 139:23 KJV
That’s the kind of man I want to be.
