Many people believe that simply calling themselves Christians guarantees heaven. But Jesus gave a sobering warning that should awaken every heart.
In Matthew 25:31–46, Jesus revealed that when He returns in His glory, He will sit on His glorious throne, and all nations will be gathered before Him. Then He will separate people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
The sheep will stand at His right hand. The goats will stand at His left.
Notice something important: both groups believed they belonged to Him. Both called Him “Lord.” Yet only one group entered eternal life.
WHO ARE THE SHEEP?
The sheep are those who truly belong to Christ. Their faith was not just words, it was demonstrated by love, compassion, mercy, and obedience.
Jesus said:
“I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed Me, I needed clothes and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you came to visit Me.” (Matthew 25:35–36)
They were not earning salvation by good works. Rather, their actions revealed hearts transformed by genuine faith.
As James 2:17 declares:
“Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
True faith produces obedience and love.
WHO ARE THE GOATS?
The goats may have appeared religious, but they ignored Christ by neglecting those in need. Their lives lacked the evidence of genuine faith.
Jesus declared:
“Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.” (Matthew 25:45)
Their profession did not match their lifestyle.
This agrees with Matthew 7:21–23, where Jesus said:
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father.”
It also agrees with 1 John 3:17–18, which teaches that God’s love cannot remain in someone who refuses to help a brother or sister in need.
THIS JUDGMENT IS CERTAIN
The Bible is clear:
* Romans 14:12 Every one of us will give an account to God.
* 2 Corinthians 5:10 We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.
* Hebrews 9:27 It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.
* Revelation 20:11–15 Those whose names are not found in the Book of Life will face eternal judgment.
Jesus ends the passage with these solemn words:
“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” (Matthew 25:46)
There is no middle ground.
EXAMINE YOUR HEART
The question is not whether you attend church.
The question is not whether you know Bible verses.
The question is not whether people call you a Christian.
Are you truly following Jesus?
Has His love changed the way you live?
Does your life reflect the compassion, holiness, and obedience of Christ?
Today is the day to repent, surrender completely to Jesus Christ, and live as one of His sheep.
Tomorrow is not promised.
