EVIL DOERS HATE THE LIGHT OF TRUTH
“For everyone that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” John 3:20
When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, this sin of disobedience brought darkness into the world.
•God selected Abraham to form a nation of people He set apart as His chosen people. •He gave Law as a pathway of light for His human creation to return to obedience.
•The Pharisees turned this law into a religious system of six hundred thirteen commandments and over six hundred positions of commands and prohibitions.
•This resulted in a religious system where righteousness was measurable and achievable through human effort.
•This system produced a society of people who calculated their righteous activities but their hearts remained distant from God: “And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me.” Isaiah 29:13
Nicodemus, a highly respected, wealthy, and powerful Pharisee secretly came to see Jesus hoping to learn his teachings. He was unknowingly seeking God’s light. •God led Nicodemus from the darkness of living an outward religious life into the spiritual realm of God’s spirit: “Truly, truly,
I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:5-6
Jesus exposes the fact that the nefarious nature of humans handcuffs many to sinfulness: “And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.” John 3:19
The scriptures use light and darkness as imagery to distinguish those who follow God’s clear course for humanity from those ensnared in Satan’s deception.
•We each must choose between deception and truth. Jesus declares: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12
•In choosing to follow Jesus, the light of the world, Believers find comfort in God’s forgiveness: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” Eph 5:8
Believers are secure in understanding that: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9
•Jesus promises that his blood rejuvenates us with new life: “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24
